Voices in the Stone: A Playback Theatre Experience
May 6, 2021
6-7:30 p.m. ET
Your story can make a difference - join us for a Playback Theatre experience! This is an interactive, community-centered storytelling theatre event in which the audience tells stories which are then reflected back by a cast of trained actors and musicians in an exciting variety of theatrical forms. This 90-minute event will bring Virginia Tech alumni together on Zoom to share stories of what it was like to attend the university. As part of the Council on Virginia Tech History's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, along with productive self-reflection at this 150-year anniversary of the university, we welcome all stories - those previously unknown, forgotten, denied, contested, or unheard. As we lead up to the event, we encourage you to think about “What does Virginia Tech mean to you? What’s your story?”
This event will be facilitated by and feature performances from a professional New York City-based theatre troupe, The Ume Group Playback Ensemble. For more information about The Ume Group, check out https://theumegroup.org/playback/. To see a sample of one of their Playback performances, watch the 4-minute video, here: https://vimeo.com/429322579.
This entire Playback theatre event will be recorded and made publicly available for the benefit of students and others who wish to learn about the forms and practice of Playback. The whole performance and excerpts thereof will be incorporated into Storytelling on Screen: An Online Playback Theatre Archive which will be released by Virginia Tech Libraries at the request of Jordan Rosin and Heidi Winters Vogel under a Creative Commons NonCommercial ShareAlike 4.0 license (CC BY NC SA 4.0). This free event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, the Council on Virginia Tech History, University Libraries, VT Stories, and the School of Performing Arts.
We have provided an opportunity at check-out to make a donation to the School of Performing Arts & Cinema Department Annual Fund for those who would like to contribute.
