Elder mistreatment is a serious, under reported, and worsening social problem. The effects are devastating, negatively impacting the physical, emotional, financial, and social health and well-being of older adults, families, caregivers, and communities.
Ageism is widely acknowledged for its inextricable link to elder abuse and mistreatment. Our population is bombarded with the message that aging is to be avoided and this leaves many older citizens feeling disconnected, or less valued, placing them at greater risk of mistreatment as they age. Stereotypes and prejudice all too frequently justify abusive behavior towards older adults, or overlook the consequences.
Join Aisling Clardy & Reed Bohn, Elder Justice Learning & Research Hub Project Managers with the Virginia Center on Aging at Virginia Commonwealth University, as they discuss and guide participants through the Helping Elders Access Resources (HEAR) program. The Virginia HEAR program uses a series of positive, solution-focused videos and discussion to educate Virginians on elder justice and ageism to combat elder mistreatment. Participants will learn to recognize and respond to elder mistreatment, and also the role ageism plays. The program aims to strengthen community action and to connect older adults, their families, and caregivers to information and local support resources. The program is fully funded by the Administration for Community Living & was recognized as a 2025 Best Practices Award winner by the Virginia Commonwealth Council on Aging.
Registration is required, which includes lunch and the HEAR workbook. Cost is $10 for workshop which includeds $5 gift to Virginia Tech's Hokie Wellness Fund.
