Black Virginians and the Civil War
February 25, 2021
6-7 p.m. ET

When people talk about Virginia and the Civil War, attention typically falls on white soldiers in gray uniforms, prominent leaders such as Robert E. Lee, and the Confederate government in Richmond. What about the one-third of the state’s population that was African American? Dr Paul Quigley, Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, will explore the rich history of Black Virginians during the Civil War--stories of refugees who helped drive Lincoln toward emancipation; stories of enslaved people forced to labor for the Confederacy; and stories of Black men in blue uniforms who fought to defeat the Confederacy and end slavery forever.
